A hamster should be fed twice a day. It should be a high-quality, pellet-based diet that meets all the pet's nutritional needs. On store shelves, you may come across brightly colored pellets; be cautious, as additives in them can be harmful to the pet's health.
Treat your pet to fresh vegetables and fruits as a good supplement to the main diet. Offer these foods in small amounts, as they may contain a lot of sugar. Avoid grapes and citrus fruits, as they are harmful to hamsters.
Are you planning to switch your pet to a different diet?
Do it gradually over a few days or weeks. This way, the hamster's digestive system will adapt gradually, and the pet won't experience stomach upset.
It's challenging to determine how much your hamster actually eats, as part of the food may be stashed away in its "stash." Such food hoarding can lead to overeating, as we don't know how much or what the pet has hidden! Supplies can spoil, and your hamster, indulging in such food, might get sick.
Don't forget about water! A significant amount of fresh water should always be freely available to your hamster.
